It’s just into the find yourself this actually starts to break apart, although smack-up finale rescues it regarding ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you will intelligently dialogued, it’ll have zero high complications inside the lifestyle off their very unsightly term.” [ 8 ]

Monthly Flick Bulletin told you “The film actions on a fast rate, the newest conversation are slick and you may characterisations basically productive. Cock Powell and you can Evelyn Keyes direct the latest cast skillfully, just like the detective try enjoyed considerable aplomb of the see your face character, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]

Richard Brody about New Yorker indexed “So it terse and you may tight flick noir are considering the newest close and elite conflicts of your label character, this new unlawful genius (played of the Penis Powell) about a stylish illegal gambling establishment. The latest film’s copywriter and you may director, Robert Rossen, sets up a beneficial multidimensional chess game, for mortal limits, between Johnny, his company (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), an excellent cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose sibling (Nina Foch) did within casino and you can old an effective corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). New caustically epigrammatic program, the newest cast’s suavely regulated body language from like and menace, and Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and fashionably cocky photos (in addition to his governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet , outlined spectacle a low profile antique of your style.” [ ten ]

Picture keeps activity and you can anticipation, and you can certain quick matches from humor to add style. Ace activities from the Knob Powell, given that a gambling home overseer, and you can Lee J. Cobb, because the a police inspector, along with in the rating . Although the spot pursue a familiar pattern, this new characterizations are new additionally the activities good enough in order to overbalance. Dialog was terse and relevant, steering clear of the psychological, phoney touching. Uncommon cam bases arrive once in a while so you can heighten appeal and temporarily arrest the interest. Solid teamplay by Robert Rossen, doubling while the manager-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, brand-new publisher and associate music producer, as well as aids in rendering it a delicate development.” [ eleven ]

Its generally a question of viewing Mr. Powell experience his paces stylishly if you are a massive shed out of stars and actresses give him customary support. Evelyn Keyes plays the favorable little woman just who brings out the finest in him and you can Ellen Received ‘s the sleek and you may slinky vixen which will get your on the jams. Thomas Gomez is greasy because the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb does a different sort of ready concert tour due to the fact a tired police inspector whom in the long run shuts happening. A great amount of drinking and you can smoking is carried out because of the all of the worried.” [ several ]
